Thru-Hiking Backpack
Custom ultralight pack for long-distance, off-trail travel
Designed in the first half of 2018, this backpack is a custom pack specially designed for long-distance, off-trail adventures.
Previously owned packs lacked back breathability, weighed over 5.5 lbs, and gave major shoulder discomfort. It was time for an upgrade. There were several lightweight backpacks on the market, but none were low-cost and rugged enough for off-trail travel.
Functional requirements include:
- Under 2lbs
- Able to comfortably carry 7 days’ worth of food + gear (~40 lbs)
- Hold all required backpacking supplies
- Removable back pad to be used as a seat cushion
- Total Project Cost < $300.
To date, it has traveled about 800 miles and held loads up to 40 lbs. This included a rugged 130 mile mostly off-trail trek in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
